6.H. Signage and Information Required by the State

The following information and materials must be available to voters at the Polling Place.

6.H.1. Propositions and State Constitutional Amendments

If a proposition appears on the ballot, an abstract of that proposition—written by the Secretary of State of Illinois and approved by the Attorney General of Illinois—will be made available to voters.

6.H.2. Specimen or Sample Ballots

Specimen or sample ballots are accurate replicas of the official ballot.

They are printed on lighter stock than official ballots and on paper of a different color

They include a header or other printed design indicating that they are sample ballots.

Specimen or sample ballots will also contain a printed code or other design feature that prevents the ballot from being entered into a tabulator.

At least one specimen or sample ballot must be available for each precinct or jurisdiction within a precinct that has a ballot being voted at that Polling Place.

Sample ballots should also be available on the Election Authority's website at least forty (40) days before the election.

6.H.3. Instructions to Voters

The election authorities shall prepare full instructions for the guidance of voters at each election, including:

  • Obtaining ballots,
  • The manner of marking ballots,
  • The method of obtaining assistance, and
  • Obtaining new ballots to replace those accidentally spoiled.

Cards of instruction shall be printed in large, clear type on separate cards and furnished to the Election Judges.
