The following classes of voters are protected under the Illinois Constitution:
Race
Color
Ethnicity
Status as a member of a language minority
National Origin
Religion
Sex
Sexual orientation
Income
VOTER DISCRIMINATION
No person shall be denied the right to register to vote or to cast a ballot in an election based on race, color, ethnicity, status as a member of a language minority, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or income.
Preventing a protected class from entering the polling place.
Using overt language such as "you people", "your kind", or "speak English".
Covert
An election judge requesting ID before attempting look up a voter in the database.
A poll watcher or election judge's excessive tendency to challenge voters who are among any of the classes listed above.
An election judge requesting a higher level of identification than that requested of a voter within a class not listed above.
An election judge claiming they cannot find a voter in the database.
Note: A poll watcher can ask to see the search results on the computer as a part of "all reasonably requested records relating to the conduct of the election".
If unsatisfied with the search results, poll watcher can ask to watch as the election judge preforms a search.
