7.J. Voters Waiting To Vote Within the Polling Room

Voters who have not applied for a ballot must wait outside the Polling Room.

The number of voters allowed to wait inside the Polling Room depends on the number of voting booths or voting machines in use.

If the Polling Room is at capacity for voters waiting to vote, no additional voter may enter until another voter leaves. An Election Judge determines when a voter may enter the Polling Room and approach the ballot application station.

Relevant Illinois State Law

Besides the election officer, not more than 2 voters in excess of the whole number of voting booths provided shall be allowed within the proximity of the voting booths at one time.

10 ILCS 5/17-9

After the opening of the polls, the election judges shall permit within the proximity of the voting machine or machines at any one time, not more than twice as many voters waiting to vote, as there are voting machines in use in that election precinct or district.
