Chapter 3 — Registering To Vote

3.E. Documentation Needed To Register To Vote

Two (2) documents are needed to register to vote.

Not three (3).

Not four (4).

One document establishes the voter's identity.

  • This may include a government issued, picture ID such as a Illinois Driver's License or State ID.
  • This ID is not time sensitive.
  • Expired IDs are not automatically disallowed, but an Election Judge may choose to accept a challenge to an expired ID.
  • Driver's licenses and state IDs with an address other than the address at which the voter is claiming to register are not automatically disallowed, but the Election Judge may choose to accept a challenge.
  • IDs other than driver's licenses and state IDs are allowed.

The other document establishes the voter's current address.

  • This ID is time sensitive. It should be dated as close to Election Day as possible.
  • There is no time limit but an Election Judge is more likely to accept a challenge the further away from Election Day the document is dated.
